Pandya Dynasty

Pandya Dynasty
The Pandya kingdom, with its capital at Madu-rai, controlled the Tamil country from very ancient times but lost, in the eighth century, its capital to the Cholas, while the Pandya ruler took refuge in Ceylon. The Cholas and their allies retained their hold on the Pandya country for nearly 300 years. At the end of that period, the Pandya prince, Maravaraman Sundar, recovered his ancestral lands by defeating Kotottunga Chola (1178-1216). Toward the end of the 13th century, the Pandyas were weakened by internal dissensions.
Malik Kafur seized Madurai in 1310. Subsequently, the rise of Vi-jayanagar hastened the downfall of the Pandyas.
